Narrator and point of view

The short story “Gon-do-la” by Annemarie Neary is a third-person narration rendered by an anonymous narrator who only observes what is happening with the characters. The narrator has limited knowledge regarding the events, but unlimited knowledge about Zhang’s feelings and thoughts.  

When it comes to the outcome of events, the narrator confines himself solely to the perspective of Zhang. This is why the narrator offers readers only the information Zhang comes across. For example, Zhang does not know what the foreman will announce and she finds out together with the readers:

Someone handed the foreman a megaphone as the empty conveyor belts flowed on behind his back. Zhang hoped he had something worthwhile to say. Production is Glory, she thought. Waste no Breath but for Labour.
“New moulds have been manufactured,” the foreman announced, his voice like a quacking duck on account of the megaphone. “No more Golden Pyramid pencil sharpeners. From now on, Work Group 25 will be making a model ...
