Analysis

In the following sections, we will present an analysis of "Everyone Talked Loudly in Chinatown" by Anne Jew.

We will consider the structure of the story, for example looking at the in medias res beginning and the open ending. We will also consider the significance of the title.

We will move on to characterise the central characters of the short story, focusing especially on Lin, who is both the first person narrator and the main character.

Next, we will consider the setting of the story, focusing especially on the social setting and the cultural conflicts it presents between Eastern and Western values.

We will briefly consider the narrator of the story, noting how the first person perspective limits our perception of events to Lin.

Finally, we will consider the language used in the story, as well as the use of literary devices such as similes and symbols.

You can read the full analysis in the following sections.
