Analysis

In the following pages we present you with our analysis of “Do not go gentle into that good night” by Dylan Thomas.

Regarding its composition, this type of poem is called villanelle. Each stanza concludes that, regardless of the type of men affected by death, a sense of rage and refusal to die is experienced by everybody.

The poem includes several characters: the speaker, his father, and several categories of people. The speaker uses a variety of people only to show that, regardless of their background, all people have death in common and their refusal to accept it.

All in all, we can say that the language and style of the poem make it come across as lyrical and poetic. The fixed form of the villanelle clearly sets the reader to expect something very lyrical. The author relies on imagery to make the poem more lyrical and appealing.
