Uddrag
Nedenfor kan du se et kort uddrag fra vores study guide til teksten:
Title
The title of the short story, “Through the Tunnel”, refers to the main event of the plot— Jerry’s attempt to pass through a tunnel carved in a rock underwater: “He knew he must find his way through that cave, or hole, or tunnel, and out the other side.” (ll. 167-168)
The title has a symbolical function because it becomes a metaphor for a rite of passage. The challenge Jerry sets for himself is about proving himself, becoming independent, and growing up. The fact that the experience is extremely painful for Jerry suggests the idea that coming of age and maturing is never easy: “He struggled on in the darkness between lapses into unconsciousness. An immense, swelling pain filled his head, and then the darkness cracked with an explosion of green light.” (ll. 260-262)
