Analysis

The analysis of the short story “Dip in the Pool” by Roald Dahl shows that the narrative follows a chronological structure. The end offers an unexpected plot twist.

The main character of the short story is Mr Botibol. Other characters such as the purser and the elderly woman appear briefly.

The setting of the story is on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean in January. The events take place during a couple of days.

The story is told from the point of view of a third-person narrator. The narrator is omniscient but focuses on Botibol’s perspective except at the end, when the perspective switches to that of the elderly woman.

The language is formal and straightforward. The dialogue has some informal elements, making it sound more authentic.
