Summary

In “Dead Man’s Shoes” by David Evans, when Piet Bezuidenhout dies, many suitors come to court his widow Anne who is now the owner of a big and successful estate in South Africa. Anne is polite with her suitors but never accepts their offers. However, seven of them continue to try and persuade Anne to marry after she decides to run the farm on her own with the help of a black employee, Sam Pitso.

The men that court her are: Harry Smith, who is an auctioneer; Jamie Roy, who is also a farmer; Japie van Os, who is very rich; Frank Sellars, who is a trader; Hannes Snyman, who is the butcher; the narrator, who is a headmaster; and Maritz Grootbek, who is a lawyer.

When they hear about Anne running the farm on her own, they warn her about being lonel...
