Analysis

On these pages, we give you an overview of the most important elements that should be included in the analysis of the short story "Day Trippers" by Raman Mundair. The story was included in the written exam in English B on HHX from December 5th, 2016.

First, we look at the structure of the short story and find that it does not necessarily follow an ordinary plot structure, partially because there is no real resolution to the story leaving the readers to guess for themselves what happens next with the two main characters Parminder and Gurpreet.

We go on to take a closer look a the two main characters. We find that both of them are developing throughout the story as they both change as the story progresses.

Examining the setting of the story reveals that the physical location is somewhere in contemporary Britain and that many of the scenes take place in locations connected with Indian culture. The social roles for men and women in Western and Indian culture is a major clue in the short story.

The clash of cultures are also evident in the language of the text which is spiced with many Punjabi words. In our investigation of the language we also find that the use of Punjabi instead of English also serves as symbolism for identifying with Indian culture rather than a British.

This is just a brief summary of our analysis and we recommend that you go on to read more to get the full understanding of the elements.
