Setting

The poem “Colonization in Reverse” by Louise Bennett-Coverley is set in Jamaica. Just like many other islands in the Caribbean Sea, Jamaica was a British colony for centuries and became independent in 1962. The poem discusses large numbers of Jamaicans moving to Britain all at once which alludes to the British Nationality Act and places the time setting of the poem sometime around 1948 when the act came into effect. One of the results of the British Nationality Act was that some people criticized mass immigration, claiming that it will affect the locals. ...
