Discussion

Here, you are asked to discuss the way in which climate change affects our world. We will help you by providing some points on the topic based on the five source materials. First, we will discuss the pros and cons of climate change and then we will focus on the future of climate change.

Pros and Cons

The five sources in your exam material present both the pros and cons of climate change. Note, however, that the cons outweigh the pros, as you are about to see.

If you choose to focus on the more positive aspects of climate change, we recommend you turn your attention to “'Chasing Ice': Time-Lapse Cameras Capture Rapidly Melting Glaciers” (source 1), “Obama to unveil tougher climate change plan” (source 2) and “How technology is fighting to prevent a climate-change apocalypse” (source 3). All three sources show how climate change can push companies and society to find alternative energy sources and contribute to helping the environment. Although none of the sources suggests that climate change has positive outcomes, they do point to examples where people have reacted to climate change in a way that might start to combat it.

When it comes to the cons of climate change, we recommend you focus on “Climate change: How do we know?” (source 4) and “Selected photos from: Planned curbs in greenhouse gas emissions won't prevent global warming 'danger limit' being reached, warns report” (source 5). Both sources show several pieces of evidence regarding the seriousness of climate change and the way it affects our planet. The other three sources (1, 2 and 3) also contain some evidence about the dramatic negative effects of climate change.

Next, we have summarized the pros and cons of climate change as they are presented in the five texts from your source material:

Positive aspects regarding climate change:

  • Experts learn about climate change and teach others about its effects through years of work and study (text 1);

The future of climate change

Here, you are invited to imagine that you report from the future and discuss the way in which climate change will evolve, based on an overview of its past (based on the five source materials).

On the one hand, the information presented in “'Chasing Ice': Time-Lapse Cameras Capture Rapidly Melting Glaciers” (text 1) suggests that mankind will realize the dangers and consequences of climate change only after a disaster takes place. The same source mentions hurricane Sandy that hit New York in 2012 and brought disastrous consequences. Imagine that a similar event – even more dangerous – takes place. How will the world’s population react in the case of an extreme weather event, similar to those presented in texts 1, 4 and 5...
