Style of language

The short story “Butterflies” by Patricia Grace is written in a neutral style. There are no contractions in the narrative, but the style is casual, using common words. The account of the events is presented in an impartial manner, with no emotional involvement. 

The story contains a lot of dialogue, since the plot revolves around the characters’ interactions. The grandparents express themselves informally, with grammar errors, such as: “ ‘Do what she say’ ” . This suggests that the grandparents’ lack a formal education and helps to explain why they are so keen for their granddaughter to go to school. 

The grandfather also employs an unusual word order in his final sentence: “ ‘your teacher, she buy all her cabbages from the...
