The miners' strike 1984-1985

In 1984 in the United Kingdom, the coal miners who were part of the National Union of Mineworkers went on a major national strike in an effort to prevent the planned the closure of several mines. The British government, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at the time, aimed to reduce the power of the trade unions and overhaul the coal industry to increase efficiency and competitiveness. This miners’ strike is an important event that is also portrayed in the film Billy Elliot (2000) directed by Stephen Daldry.
