Summary

The film Bend It Like Beckham (2002) directed by Gurinder Chadha opens with a dream sequence in which Jess Bhamra imagines she is playing football for England alongside David Beckham. She scores a goal. In a studio scene, the reporters discuss Bhamra’s career prospects. Her mother is not happy that Jess plays football and tells her to come home.

The dream scene changes to reality with Mrs. Bhamra calling Jess while she is watching football on TV. She tells her to stop watching football because her sister, Pinky, is waiting for her downstairs. Pinky is getting engaged tomorrow to Tejinder and wants to go shopping with Jess. 

On her way home from shopping, Jess stops to play football in the park with her classmate, Tony and his friends. A girl named Jules Paxton is passing by, and she stops to watch Jess play. The next day, Jules goes up to Jess and asks her to join her football team, Hounslow Harriers. Jess agrees.

At the tryouts, Jess manages to impress the coach, Joe. He asks Jess if her parents are okay with her playing football. She says they are, so Joe tells her she is now part of the team. Jules tells Jess that she wants to play football professionally in America. 

Jess talks to her posters of David Beckham about her football tryouts. She thinks Jules is lucky that her parents are supportive of her hobby. Jules and her father play football in the yard. Mrs. Paxton scolds them. 

Joe gives Jess her football kit. Jess does not want to play in shorts because she is ashamed of a scar on her leg. Joe shows Jess his own injury which prevents him from playing. He tells her that as long as her scar does not affe...
