Characters

The most important characters in “Beggarland” by Alan Sillitoe are Jane, the protagonist, and Greta, Ben, Angela, and Tim as secondary characters. Note that the story also mentions the collective characters of the beggars and the people in the Underground.

Jane is a developing character because her attitude towards her employee Greta and the topic of begging changes by the end of the story.

Greta is a secondary character in the story. She is a young woman (l.5) from the North of England, hired as an au pair by Jane. Her task is to entertain Jane’s children throughout the summer.

Tim is Jane's husband and is mostly absent from the story, briefly appearing in discussions with Jane.
