In your analysis of Barack Obama's inaugural address from 2013, we encourage you to take a closer look at statements and claims that are in some way debatable, controversial, or remarkable.

The most commented on (and praised) aspect of Barack Obama's speech was his endorsement of gay rights and same-sex marriage: “Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law…” (ll. 196-198);

This was the first time that a US President addressed the issue in an inaugural address, making Obama’s speech unique and progressive. However, at that time about 40% of Americans were opposed to gay rights and same sex-marriages according to opinion polls conducted by Pew Research Center. Although the majority of Americans supported gay rights, a strong proportion did not, suggesting that this would make his speech controversial with some. However, the fact that Obama did not need to worry about being re-elected may have meant he felt he could address these issues more openly.
