Title
The title of the story, “Petronella”, is typical for fairy-tales that are named after the main female protagonists (such as “Cinderella” or “Snow White”). However, because the name is not a very common one, the title hints that the fairy-tale is not a typical ‘princess is saved by the prince’ narrative: “But the youngest prince turned out to be a girl. ‘Well,’ said the king gloomily, ‘we can’t call her Peter. We’ll have to call her Petronella.’ ” (p. 113, ll. 12-15)
In the tale, Petronella is a genuine heroine who goes looking for her fortune and prince in the world, overcoming magic challenges and confronting an apparently evil enchanter to save her prince: “ ‘I’m going with you,’ she said. ‘I’ll find a prince if I have to rescue one from something myself. And that’s that.’ ” (p. 113, ll. 31-32)
