Characterization of Earl Ober
Here, we give you a characterization of the main character in the short story “They're Not Your Husband” by Raymond Carver.
Outer characterization
In general, Earl Ober's physical traits are not described. This may suggest that he is meant to represent a larger group of people who see their wives as extensions of themselves and who also have an inferiority complex. The only physical trait we learn about is his smile, which he tries to use as a tool to get what he wants and to earn other people's approval. This is an indication of how strongly he wants to make a good impression on others. It also points to his profession.
Earl Ober is described from the first line of the story as “a salesman who is between jobs” (p. 20, l. 2). This provides the first clue that being a salesman goes beyond a simple occupation and defines his entire identity. Since he is unemployed and seems to have difficulty finding a job, we could say that Earl might not be a very skilled salesman.
Earl Ober is married to Doreen, and the couple have children who are of school-age. Therefore, we can assume that Earl is in his 30s or 40s.
