Analysis

The rhetorical situation of the introduction to the book THEY, is that the sender is Sarfraz Manzoor, a British-Pakistani writer and journalist. The sender addresses the British people, both the Muslim population and the non-Muslims.

The structure of the text is built around the message of unity and mutual understanding. The text can be divided into two main parts, connected by a bridge.

The style of writing is a mix between formal and informal. Several language tools are used to capture the listeners’ attention and present the message.

The text uses a variety of rhetorical devices to keep the audience engaged. Manzoor uses rhetorical questions and figurative language to get the message across. Direct address is also used in the latter part of the text.

Manzoor draws heavily from his personal experience to illustrate the points he wants to get across. This highlights the fact that this matter is very personal and important for him. It also keeps the readers interested and makes the ideas he presents more relatable.

In terms of forms of appeal, Manzoor builds ethos in several ways in the text. He also appeals to pathos, for example in the section when he visits his father’s grave.
