The Quiet

This study guide will help you analyze the short story “The Quiet” by Carys Davies (2014). You can also find a summary of the text, as well as inspiration for interpreting it and putting it into perspective

Excerpt from the study guide:

Like Susan, Henry is conflicted between wanting to share his secret, and being reluctant to do so. When speaking to Susan about what happened to him, it is difficult for him to find his words, even though he previously rehearsed them in front of the mirror. In his case, the matter is further complicated by the fact that he is also guilty of a crime. However, he still wants to unburden himself and find a sympathetic listener.

Having realized that Susan is going through the same thing he once did, he wants not only to confide in her, but also to help her. His motivation is entirely selfless, and shows that, even though he committed a crime, he is a good person.

It is worth noting that when he tells Susan his secrets, Henry is taking a big risk. He realizes this himself when Susan does not say anything at first, and Henry fears that he has misread the signs, and Susan will turn against him. However, even when contemplating this possibility, Henry does not get angry, although he begins to plan against this outcome. He thinks about running away . This shows that he is realistic and practical. It also highlights that he does not have any regrets. He does not regret killing his wife, which is why he will not sit around and wait to receive his punishment.

Furthermore, Henry does not regret sharing his story with Susan and does not think about turning against her, even if she is not on his side. It does not even occur to him to silence her or threaten her so she does not reveal his secret. This highlights that he is fair in his judgement. He murdered his wife who abused him but does not consider hurting an innocent person.

Henry’s crime is the result of his reaching a breaking point and being unable to find another way out of his constant suffering. Like in Susan’s case, his suffering appears pointless and unfair and without any end in sight. This is why, the readers feel sympathetic towards Henry, despite what he has done.
