Poetic devices

The poem “The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd” by Sir Walter Raleigh uses several poetic devices to express its message. 

Alliteration

Alliteration is used in the poem in the second stanza, when describing the effects of time on the natural environment:

Time drives the flocks from field to fold,
When Rivers rage and Rocks grow cold. (ll-5-6).

The alliteration in “f” evokes a dismal image of an otherwise natural process. The alliteration in “r” which follows provides a harsh reminder of the unpleasant effects of the passage of time.
