Style of writing

The language used by Khaled Hosseini in the novel The Kite Runner reflects the characters’ backgrounds and dialects. The author introduces a large variety of words and expressions in Farsi, which highlight the characters’ status and their connection to their country. For example, Hassan and Ali often address Baba and Amir with the honorific title “Agha”, which shows their respect for their masters, but also highlights the servants’ lower status. On the same note, older characters often address younger characters with “bachem”, which is a term of endearment. For example, Khala Jamila and General Taheri often use this term when they speak to Amir or Soraya.

Among the most used words and expressions in Farsi are “tashakor”, “zendagi migzara”, “namaz”, “nang”, and “namoos”. Then, words like “pakoras”, “naan”, “samosas”, “biryani” – which are related to food – help the author create an authentic atmosphere, which captivates readers.
