The Dead

James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist, short story writer, poet and literary critic. In his early 20s he emigrated to Switzerland with his wife and spent most of his life abroad. He is especially known for his novel Ulysses (1922) which is considered a highly important work of modernist fiction. The story “The Dead” is the final story in his 1914 short story collection Dubliners, which describes the Irish middle class at the beginning of the 20th century. It is the longest story in the collection.
