The short story “The Boss Came to Dinner” by Bhisham Sahni begins in medias res with the frantic preparations for the visit of Shamnath’s boss later that evening. The events take place chronologically during the same day, describing the visit and its aftermath.

The first beginning creates a dynamic atmosphere which expresses a sense of urgency and anticipation. A source of tension occurs in the story when Shamnath’s mother is referred to as “a problem”: “Suddenly a problem reared up before Shamnath.
