We recommend you read the short story “Imitation” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which was also published in the collection The Thing Around Your Neck. “Imitation” tells the story of Nkem, a Nigerian woman who lives in Philadelphia with her children. Nkem finds out that her husband has a mistress in Nigeria, and contemplates her life and her relationship. The story also looks at the theme of the American Dream, which is mainly connected with Nkem’s desire to make her children happy and to provide them with proper education and American liberties. 

The short story “Cell One” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has also been published in the collection The Thing Around Your Neck. “Cell One” tells the story of a young man named Nnamabia, whose wish to be popular makes him steal from his family. Two years after this incident, Nnamabia is arrested when authorities believe that he is a member of a cult. The story explores the theme of cruelty and injustice and also looks at the theme of coming of age.
