Summary

Ronald Reagan begins his “Tear down this wall” speech with a reference to Kennedy’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech from 1963. He then reinforces the American presidents’ support for Berlin and their connection with the city. Reagan then addresses the listeners in Eastern Europe and East Berlin and presents his belief that there should only be one Berlin, as all Berliners are equal. Reagan continues by explaining that the Brandenburg Gate is not only a symbol of freedom for Germany but the entire world.

Then, Reagan talks about the Marshall Plan and how it benefited Berlin and West Germany after the end of World War II. He reminds Berliners of the social, political, cultural, and economic development of Berlin and Germany, and highlights the idea that Berlin is a symbol of determination.
