Literary perspectives

The novel Running Wild by J.G. Ballard belongs to the crime fiction genre. 

This type of fiction is centered on a crime as a significant plot element. There is often a murder which investigators have to solve. Readers have access to the same information as the investigators so they can attempt to solve the mystery along with the characters. 

Crime fiction also relies on suspense and tension. There are elements of foreshadowing, clues, and turning points, some of which may turn out to be red herrings. In the novel, the various theories presented in the beginning turn out to be red herrings. However, the novel does not rely extensively on such distractions, as Greville arrives quickly to the correct conclusion.
