Literary perspectives

The short story “Fat” by Raymond Carver can be considered an example of dirty realism, as evidenced by the physical and social setting, as well as the language. In works of dirty realism, the characters are typically lower-class, have ordinary occupations and appear trapped in an unfortunate situation, with too little money or resources to improve their condition. The narrator’s blue-collar job as a waitress, as well as her depression and lack of satisfaction with her current condition is a typical example of dirty realism. 

The story also has minimalist features, as the language is generally kept simple and informal, focusing on describing things as they happen without adding unneccessary details and descriptions.
