Intention

William Collis’ main intention in his TED talk “How video game skills can get you ahead in life” is to convince possible skeptics that esports should have the same status as traditional sports. First, Collis achieves his intention by providing a detailed review of the skills professional gamers need and use. He uses parallels between traditional sports and games and esports, which show the audience that the two categories are similar. Then, Collis argues that many of these abilities can be applied more widely in society. For example, he presents rhetorical questions to suggest that esports develop skills that are just as valued in today’s society as the ones developed by traditional sports. 

Collis also intends to present gaming as a legitimate hobby that can bring positive effects.
