Works with the same theme

The short story “Red Christmas” by Paula Morris also features children who are forced to work because their parents are either not employed, or they do not earn enough to support the whole family. While in “Red Christmas”, Ani considers running away but eventually decides against it because she does not want to leave her siblings behind, the pretty girl in this excerpt runs away from home when she has enough money to rent a place of her own.

The theme of ambition and perseverance is also present in the film Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle. The film follows a young man from the slums of Mumbai as he competes in the show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? in an attempt to gain the attention of his love interest. The film also tackles subjects present in the excerpt from the novel, such as the consequences of poverty and the need for financial security. Unlike the excerpt, which ends with the pretty girl leaving the narrator, the film has a happy ending and the two lovers are reunited.
