Plot differences

On this page, we will give an overview of the main differences between the plot of the novel Fight Club (1996) by Chuck Palahniuk and the movie Fight Club (1999) by David Fincher.

One of the main differences between book and movie is that many of the quotations that come from the narrator to the readers have instead been put into conversations between the characters, so they say things aloud that the narrator merely thinks to himself in the novel. However, there is still a voiceover from the narrator throughout the movie, so we still have direct access to his thoughts in many cases. 

Many sections have been cut or altered. For example, the narrator first meets Tyler on an airplane in the movie, while in the book he meets him at a nude beach. Also, in the movie the narrator and Tyler get fat for their soap by going through the dumpsters at a liposuction clinic instead of by tricking Marla’s mother. The two murders that Tyler commits (the narrator’s boss and the mayor’s special envoy on recycling) are also absent from the movie, although he is still depicted as reckless and dangerous towards the end.
