Censorship in schools

This study guide will help you work with the topic of censorship in schools, which was used for a written exam in English B on HF from the 17th of May 2023.

Write a short analytical essay (at least 300 words) about Text 2 “The Issues of Youth Censorship”. You must focus on how Olivia Orlewicz argues for and against censorship.

Audience and medium

Orlewicz delivered her TED talk at TEDxYouth, an independently organized TED event in British Columbia, Canada. The talk was then also uploaded to the TED website. The audience of Orlewicz’s talk is comprised of the people who attended the talk live in 2020 and also everyone who wishes to watch it online on the TED website.

Orlewicz’s intended audience seems to be teachers, parents, or anyone else who might have a decision factor regarding whether or not certain topics should be tackled by children. During her talk, Orlewicz actively addresses her main audience directly: “So, parents, be open with your kids.” By showing herself understanding of the parents’ discomfort, Orlewicz might come across as approachable to them, and they might be more receptive to her main message, which is that adults should not impose their views on children by censoring issues ...
