Characters

The most important characters in “Braces” by Nick Werber are Nick, as the main character, and Nick’s father and his grandfather, as secondary characters. Note that Nick also mentions his mother, his sister, his father’s childhood housemaster, and his friends at school.

Nick is a developing character. By the end of the story, his fantasy to get away from his situation becomes stronger, and readers can imagine that he feels more conflicted than he did at the beginning of the story.

Nick’s father is not a developing character. He is an adult who, after being denied the chance to pursue his dreams earlier in life, chose to leave his profession and become an actor.

Nick’s grandfather is also not a developing character. He is extremely self-confident and determined and remains this way until the end of the story.

Next, you can read their characterisation and a discussion about the contrast in their relationships.
