Misunderstandings

One of the main themes of the novel Atonement by Ian McEwan is misunderstandings and miscommunication. Much of the novel focuses on how people can interpret the same events in different ways depending on their perspectives, and Briony’s story highlights the dangers of failing to account for other people’s perspectives. 

The most important moment in the novel which relates to this theme is Robbie and Cecilia’s meeting by the fountain. This scene is shown from three different perspectives: Cecilia’s, Briony’s, and then Robbie’s in retrospect. Cecilia’s actions at the fountain stem from her wish to punish Robbie for his awkward behavior around her and her failure to understand her own feelings for him.
