Discussion: The American Dream

If you have encountered Anand Giridharadas’ TED talk “A tale of two Americas. And the mini-mart where they collided” as part of the STX English A exam assignment from August 20, 2019, you must discuss the concept of the American Dream.

As with any discussion, you should take your starting point in some of the arguments presented in the TED talk. However, you can also draw in arguments or developments from outside the talk. You may agree with the speaker in some respects, but may also want to make counterarguments. Always remember to back up your arguments, avoid subjective comments, and present the topic from at least two different points of view.

Giridharadas argues that for about half of the American population, the concept of the American Dream is dead. They no longer feel that they live in a society where it will be possible for them to build better lives for themselves. As a contrast, the other half of America still believes, simply because they have stable, good lives. According to Giridharadas, the solution is that this more fortunate half must take action and reach out to the less fortunate half.
