All three texts deal with the topic of consumption and depict various attitudes when it comes to it. We will look at each text at a time and present the attitudes they discuss:

  • “Living With Less. A Lot Less” by Graham Hill
  • “Collaborative Consumption: Tool Sharing” by Samir Jeraj
  • “Feeling sad? Go shopping because it really does make you happier, say psychologists” by the Daily Mail Reporter

“Living With Less. A Lot Less”

The author of Text 1, Graham Hill, has an overall negative attitude towards consumption. His attitude is based on his own experience. When he was younger, he succeeded to make a lot of money by selling a consultancy website. This led to him developing a consumerist attitude. However, he soon came to realize that buying and owning more things was not making him happier; on the contrary, he was more stressed.

“Collaborative Consumption: Tool Sharing”

“Collaborative Consumption: Tool Sharing” is an article by Samir Jeraj, published on the website The Ecologist, in 2012.

In his article, the author describes a new trend regarding consumption - tool sharing. The trend has been triggered by a man named Sam who founded StreetBank, a site dedicated to people lending each other tools and other things.

“Feeling sad? Go shopping because it really does make you happier, say psychologists”

Text 3 is an article published in Daily Mail in 2011.

The article is an account of a survey done by psychologists regarding the impact shopping has on people’s mood. The survey found that shopping can have positive effects; it is a way to treat oneself and even to forget other troubles.
