Comment: The consequences of consumption in Text 1

In Text 1, “Living With Less. A Lot Less” by Graham Hill, there is a line drawing attention to the effects of consumption on the environment and society: “Enormous consumption has global, environmental and social consequences.” (p. 2, ll. 93-94)

As you have seen, “Living With Less. A Lot Less” is an opinion article in which the author argues for a lifestyle which is sustainable and involves owning fewer things.

In your comment of the quote, consider the consequences the writer refers to. Some of them are mentioned in the article while others are only implied. Graham Hill talks about pollution and decrease of resources which, in turn, lead to higher global temperatures (global warming). These are clearly environmental consequences:

When it comes to social consequences, Graham Hill does not really mention them directly, except for ‘exploitive labour’, but he does imply that consumption steals time which we could spend engaging in social activities that would truly make us happy:
