Summary

Maggie Robb’s “Automatic Upgrade” takes place on a plane trip from India to Surrey in Britain, and it revolves around a young Indian man, Ramesh and his grandmother Nani. The two are travelling to Surrey to meet Ramesh’s sister Preity, who lives there with her husband and three children. While on the plane, Nani makes small talk with a stranger next to her, shows him pictures of her family and talks about Ramesh and his future career as a doctor. She also draws some parallels between him and his sister. While Preity is happily married, Ramesh is still single and jobless. Ramesh is more interested in a lovely stewardess called Sonia.

While eating, Ramesh tells his grandmother he intends to give up being a doctor and start working in the mobil...
