Characterisation of Ramesh

In this section we will help you with the characterisation of Ramesh who is the main character in this short story. We find out most of the things about Ramesh indirectly from his thoughts, gestures and attitudes or from his grandmother’s comments and reactions. The author does not describe him directly.

We see that Ramesh feels the pressure of his family, particularly his grandmother:

"Why would you do a crazy thing like this?" she had said, shaking her head over the plastic tray of food. "What would your father say if he was alive? How will I look my neighbours in the eye?" (ll. 7-9)

He is also embarrassed by her sometimes:

"Nani," he had hissed, "leave the man alone. Can't you see he is reading?" But Nani had brushed his restraining hand awa...
