Nani dresses and acts like a traditional Indian woman, yet she is not afraid to try new things such as a western dish:

“He had expected her to take the Indian meal but she had surprised him and chosen the western menu."I want to assimilate before we get there," she said, tucking the folds of her sari around her knees, reaching up to fiddle with the air conditioner and the reading light.” (ll. 17-20)

More interestingly, upon her death and after searching her bag, Ramesh discovers a driver’s license which means Nani may not have been so traditional, as we were led believe in the beginning:
