Style of writing

The language in the short story “The Castle” by Chloë Heuch is informal and conversational for the most part. The narrator inserts her own comments into the narrative, giving the impression that she is telling the story directly to the readers: “Not that my eyes could as I was still looking for a parking space at that point. But you get the picture.” This gives readers the sensation that they are close to the narrator, which helps them empathize with her.

Dialogue plays an important part in the story, as it highlights the conflict between the narrator and Osian, which can be seen in their interactions:

‘Love, what is it?’ I leaned toward him, desperate to comfort him but he shrugged me off.

‘Don’t Mum.’

‘Don’t what?’
