Structure and tone

In this part of the study guide, we will briefly discuss the structure and the tone of the speech.

Structure

Note that we have already discussed the structure of the speech in an extended manner in the section dedicated to “Logos”. Here are some brief points connected to the structure. The speech of the First Lady has an introduction, a body (arguments supported with examples) and an ending.

Introduction

The First Lady begins her speech with a welcome address for the audience. She then gives thanks to the facilitators of the discussion, and she introduces her agenda – the main idea of her speech and the reason for her presence: the pursuit of higher education.

Body

The First Lady divides her speech into sections. First, she encourages students to commit to education. She then shares her own experience as a student wanting to go to college, and she talks about the difficulties she has overcome. She then gives another example- that of Roger Sanchez, a boy from the Dominican Republic who manage...
