Tone and style

One of your tasks is to analyse and discuss the style and tone of the article. First, note that Law’s article, “Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language”, is constructed gradually: he begins by stating the greatness of the English language, he continues with an anecdote, with an overview of the way in which English has conquered nations, and continues with the example of the Welsh language being subdued by English.

Style

Overall, the author’s writing style conveys the message of the article simply and clearly, while also keeping the readers engaged and curious. As we have previously mentioned, Law transmits his message through several rhetorical devices, linguistic techniques and forms of appeal;

Tone

Tom Law’s tone is mainly ironic and critical but also nostalgic. When he talks about the way in which Welsh has been subdued by the English language, Law’s tone is ironic and sarcastic:

The Welsh language has declined so rapidly because the English placed a pillow over its face and smothered it. It has taken around years to complete, there have been occasional bouts of kicking and thrashing against, but it's pretty much job done. (ll. 123-128)

Also, Law’s tone becomes critical when he talks about the way in which the English language has engulfed the languages of other nations, without the right to appeal:
