Narrator and point of view

The short story “Eating Sugar” by Catherine Merriman is a third-person narration. The narrator, who is outside the plot, uses the point of view of one of the characters to convey the events—of Alex who is visiting his daughter in Thailand, together with his wife: “For a moment, emerging from the forest trail onto the deserted road, Alex thought they’d taken the wrong path down from the waterfall.” (p. 16, ll. 1-2)

This implies that the author conveys Alex’s thoughts and perspective on the events he experiences and on the people he meets. This also means that the narrator confines himself to Alex’s point of view, having limited knowledge of the events: “What was the alternative? They could walk (…) It would be dark in, what, and hour?
