Analysis

On this page, we give you an overview of the analysis of the short story "Eating Sugar" by Catherine Merriman that we provide on the following pages.

The first element that we analyse is the structure of the short story. We find that the plot is progressing in a fairly traditional way. We also analyse the meaning of the title  "Eating Sugar" here.

We then proceed to analyse the characters in the short story. We focus our interest on the short story's main character, Alex, but also provide som help to characterise the other persons in the text.

Next, we look at the setting of the short story. We learn that the narrative revolves around a family vacation to Thailand. This also reflects the social aspects in terms of Thai culture seen with Western eyes.

On the last two pages of our analysis, we cover the narrator, the point of view, and the language. Regarding language, we look at literary devices and find that the author uses many similes as one of the traits of the short story.
