Tiffany Hyatt published her article on the ifeminists.com website on 13th of May, 2003. 

Two years earlier, in 2001, the Baton Rouge Serial Killer committed a crime in her neighborhood. Between 2001 and 2003, many other crimes against women were committed in the Baton Rouge area – women were stalked, abducted, and murdered. The writer herself claims she has been beaten and raped by police officers. The Baton Rouge serial killer murdered seven women between 1992 and 2003. Two of the victims' bodies were found at the Whiskey Bay boat launch, approximately 30 miles of Baton Rouge (something that is alluded to in the article). In the following years, other serial killers who operated in the Baton Rouge area at the same time were identified.

In these circumstances, and as a single mother, the writer realized she was responsible for her safety and the safety of her children.
