Nathalie

Nathalie is the main character of the short story “The Kiss” by Kate Chopin. Her outer characterization reveals that she is “very handsome, with a certain fine, rich coloring that belongs to the healthy brune type” (ll. 7-8). She lives with her brother (l. 33) and has a cat (ll. 8-9). 

The narrative reveals that Nathalie is in a love triangle with Brantain and Harvy. She is a confident woman, whose attitude is reinforced by her knowledge that Brantain loves her: “She knew that he loved her” (l. 11). Nathalie is also ambitious, as she knows what she wants and is determined to get it: “The rather insignificant and unattractive Brantain was enormously rich; and she liked and required the entourage which wealth could give her” (ll. 14-16).
