Narrator and point of view
The short story “The Garden Party” by Katherine Mansfield is told by a third-person limited narrator.
The narrator only presents Laura’s thoughts and feelings towards what she experiences. For example, the narrator knows what Laura thinks when she admires herself in the mirror: “Never had she imagined she could look like that. Is mother right? she thought. And now she hoped her mother was right” (ll. 321-323). Laura’s point of view is also presented when she meets the men assigned with installing the marquee:
