Summary

The short story “The Flowers” by Alice Walker follows Myop, a 10-year-old African-American girl, who lives with her family in a sharecropper cabin. 

One summer morning, Myop is taking a walk through the rural landscape, singing and feeling at ease. She is in a good mood and is focused only on herself and the world around her. Myop admires everything around her, taking pleasure in the summer morning.

Myop decides to explore the woods behind her family’s house. She has been there several times before with her mother, in the autumn, and Myop decides to take a new path. She finds beautiful blue flowers, which she picks before deciding to return home. Myop thinks the land is suddenly silent, and she does not find it as pleasant anymore.
