Comments and discussion
In your analysis of Nelson Mandela’s inaugural speech, you should consider discussing statements the speaker made that were particularly interesting or controversial.
For example, while the speech was praised for rousing patriotic feelings, promoting national unity and democratic change, many commentators noticed that Nelson Mandela did not mention any specific measures he intended to take as President and focused only on a broad vison: “We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world.” (ll. 96-98)
Note that the electoral campaign of Mandela and his party, ANC, was criticised for the same reason. The campaign slogan promised “a better life for all”, but there were few details about how this was going to be achieved. If you look at the speech, you will also notice a section in which the speaker alludes to this electoral campaign promise: “Let there be justice for all. Let there be peace for all. Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.” (ll. 99-101)
