Historical and current perspective
Aboriginals are the native people of Australia, who inhabited the continent for thousands of years before British colonization began in the 18th century. The presence of foreign settlers had devastating effects on Aboriginals, with a large part of the population dying from diseases, loss of land, and violent encounters with the settlers.
In today’s Australia, Aboriginals still face the negative consequences of colonization and oppression by white people. While legislation has been created to protect their rights and promote equality, Aboriginals still experience a wide range of economic and social problems, such as illiteracy and low life expectancy compared to the general population. Furthermore, Aboriginals still face widespread prejudice and discrimination.
