In your exam question, you are required to provide an outline of the different views on Rachel Dolezal presented in the three texts. In what follows, we will look at each of the articles and help you establish the way they depict Rachel Dolezal.

“Civil rights activist Rachel Dolezal misrepresented herself as black, claim parents”

Text 1 was written by Jessica Elgot and published in the British media outlet The Guardian, on June 12, 2015. The article is an objective news report, simply informing the readership about the scandal surrounding American Civil Rights activist Rachel Dolezal.

The article does not side with either party; not with the parents who claim Rachel Dolezal has been lying about her African-American origins and nor with Rachel Dolezal. The author of the article simply confines herself to render what both parties claim:

“Why black women feel so betrayed by Rachel Dolezal”

Text 2 is an opinion article by French psychologist Guilaine Kinouani, published in the newspaper The Telegraph, on June 26, 2015.

Unlike Text 1, which is an objective news report, Text 2 presents the opinion of the author on the topic and it is, thus, subjective. Furthermore, the article presents a critical view on Rachel Dolezal and her lying about her racial heritage.

“Let Rachel Dolezal Be as Black as She Wants to Be”

Text 3 was written by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a former basketball player, and published in the comments section of Time Magazine, on June 15, 2015.

While Text 1 presents Rachel Dolezal in an objective manner and Text 2 in a subjective critical way, the views in Text 3 are sympathetic with the woman.
